Dulux has broken with nearly a quarter-century of tradition by announcing not one, but three shades as its Colour of the Year for 2026.
The new collection, titled “Rhythm of Blues”, is the first time the brand has unveiled a family of colours rather than a single defining shade. The palette, chosen by “a panel of colour experts and design leaders across the globe,” reflects Dulux’s shift away from trend-led selections towards a broader and more versatile approach.
Marianne Shillingford, Dulux creative director and colour expert, said the move acknowledges the complexity of blue as a global favourite.
“Blue has been the world’s favourite colour for years – but it’s far from one note,” she explained. “It delivers a sense of fluidity, relief, stillness and freedom, which is exactly what’s needed in today’s fast-paced world. Its roots in nature give us something to connect to, as well.”
The Rhythm of Blues palette is presented as a flexible family of tones designed to capture the changing rhythms of modern life – from calm reflection through to playful energy.
- Mellow Flow: a soft, light blue associated with clarity.
- Slow Swing: a deeper shade intended to provide reassurance and grounding.
- Free Groove: a vibrant, energising blue with a creative edge.
Shillingford added that the trio draws inspiration from nature and emotion:
“When we see light blues like Mellow Flow, we might think of soothing springs or sunrise skies, for example, or be reminded of the deep ocean’s chilled stillness with a dark blue like Slow Swing. Whereas Free Groove offers a more intense heat, like that of summer pool parties.”
She continued:
“Some of us are slowing the beat to recharge and find balance, while others are looking to crank up the volume and create spaces that are simply fun. Rhythm of Blues gives us the opportunity to do both – it’s a family of colours that can soothe, steady or excite, depending on how you play it. This collection offers colours you can find peace in, and colours you can dance to, centred around three distinct rhythms to offer endless possibilities for changing the pace of your space.”
The launch follows last year’s choice of True Joy, a bright yellow shade symbolising optimism. In 2024, Dulux selected Sweet Embrace, described as a delicate and modern tone designed to comfort and uplift.
